Farmers looking to exploit the Christmas turkey market need to start planning now to maximize returns as Massey Feeds Pig and Poultry Commerical Manager Mal Boocock explains.
The main priority for Christmas turkey producers is to get birds in the right weight ranges at the right time for orders. Birds need to be of good conformation, and well finished with a degree of sub-cutaneous fat. This doesn’t happen by accident and requires close attention to the strain of bird, nutrition and general management.
The aim must be to exploit the tremendous capacity for growth. The key driver for growth is protein or more specifically the key amino acids, lysine, methionine, cysteine and threonine. Energy levels are also important with increasing levels in later diets to produce better feed conversions and improved finish on the bird.
The Massey Feeds range of turkey feed is specifically formulated using traditional ingredients to provide a well-balanced supply of protein, energy, vitamins, minerals and trace elements to meet the birds’ requirements through all growth stages. They ensure good feed intake and growth rates throughout the growing phase.
The range includes:
Turkey Starter crumbs to be fed from day old upto 5-6 weeks and designed to promote early intakes, good growth and development and early feathering. Turkey Grower pellets to be fed from 5-6 weeks until 10-11 weeks old and formulated to maintain rapid growth and frame development
Turkey Finisher pellets designed to be fed from 11-12 weeks and for at least four weeks prior to slaughter to encourage lean meat and the required level of subcutaneous fat to give optimum finish. Both Turkey Starter and Grower include a coccidiostat, but Turkey finisher is medicine free, so there is no withdrawl period. All are available on bags or in bulk.
In addition we manufacture two diets for the all-year round producer, Turkey Grower 19 and Turkey Grower 23 which can be introduced into the above programme and are available in bulk loads only. Feeding Massey Feeds turkey diets and using a flexible approach will ensure turkey producers achieve good confirmation and finish at the desired range of market weights to maximize returns.
