Massey Feeds Forage Analysis Service

Massey Bros. are one of the few feed companies able to analyse forage samples using their own NIRS (Near Infra-Red Reflectance Spectroscopy) machine.  The latest Bruker Matrix D NIRS instrument that we employ is used primarily for our own internal quality control for all incoming feed materials and outgoing finished products.

We are part of the Forage Analytical Assurance group (FAA) and one of only five UK compound feed manufacturers who are in the group.  The group was set up in 2000 to bring together most laboratories that undertake silage analyses to standardise the methods of analysis and reduce between-laboratory variation.  This means that if a sample is sent to any of the FAA laboratories, the result would be near enough the same, whichever laboratory performed the test.

As a group, we carry out monthly bias checks, to determine if any machine is “drifting” away from the others, so that quick and decisive corrective measures can be taken.  We also carry out annual ring tests, where we test the similarity between laboratories as well as the accuracy of the calibration itself (it’s fine if we all say the same thing, but is it actually correct?)

You can find out more about the FAA at www.faagroup.co.uk

At Massey Bros. we carry out hundreds of grass silage, maize silage and whole crop silage analyses each year as well as fresh grass tests.  These are a valuable tool to assess the potential from grazing in the key summer months.  We can also test customers own wheat, barley, beans and other crops for their nutritional value (just as we do on incoming feed materials) as well as some home mixes.
