Feeding Ewes up to Lambing

sheep feed

Paul Drake, Beef and Sheep Commercial Manager looks at options for ewe feeding in the run up to lambing.

The requirements of profitable sheep enterprise are healthy ewes with sound feet and udders; lambs with that get up and go after birth; plenty of ewe colostrum for lamb immunity against disease and a plentiful milk supply.

There are huge energy demands on the ewe as lambing time approaches. 70% of the lamb growth occurs in the last six weeks pre-lambing at a time when the ewe’s appetite reduces by 30%.

We have a range of quality sheep feeds in nuts and rolls to meet energy requirements in varying situations from indoor ewes fed on straw to hill sheep fed outside.

Feeding the correct minerals is also crucial. All our sheep feed range contain cheleated minerals, Bioplex Zinc and Selplex, plus 150 iu of Vitamin E (this is made up from 125 iu of added Vitamin E and 25 iu of Vitamin E from Trouw AO-mix.

Trouw AO-Mix is a blend of natural plant compounds (polyphenols), which are high in antioxidant activity. Antioxidants are essential to help protect cells against damage from free radicals which are created under high metabolic stress or when infection and disease occur. AO Mix’s blend of natural polyphenols help to improve anti-oxidant status both inside, and outside the cell wall, and work with vitamin E and selenium to help support fertility, vitality and immune function.

This package of minerals helps to support all the requirements for profitable sheep enterprise - quality colostrum, quality milk, udder health, hoof quality and lamb growth rates.
