Massey Feed Specialist Tim Heyworth says rapid rehydration can reduce problems post-calving.

Post-calving dehydration, affects all cows. Cows will lose around 50 litres of fluids and salts when they calve, made up of blood and other fluids. A dehydrated cow takes longer to stand and eat so it is vital to get them rehydrated as soon as possible after calving.

Of course water should always be accessible  but it is only part of the solution. You also need to replace the electrolytes - salts and minerals that have also been lost.

F1 Fresh Start is a post-calving drink specially formulated to help rehydrate cows rapidly and effectively. It contains a balance of electrolytes along with vitamins A, D and E and all important phosphorous.

Rumen protected choline is included to aid liver function, while added yeast helps improve rumen function in rumen microflora. Whey and dextrose provide an energy boost to kick start recover, and help reduce the risk of ketosis, retained cleansings and DA’s.

It is quick and easy to use. 1kg of F1 Fresh Start powder is mixed with two litres of hot water followed by a further 10-20 litres of cool fresh clean water. To maximise the benefit it should be fed within 10 minutes of calving. Costing less than £5 per cow it is a very cost effective way to reducing many post calving issues and get cows settled into lactation more quickly.
